Most of us non-believers have heard where R. Dawkins said that "Organizing atheists is like hearding cats." Well, he said something else that has more meaning to what is going on here:
Let us try to teach generosity and altruism, because we are born selfish.
Richard Dawkins
Yesterday, just before I was leaving work the total was $935, and had been for over a day. Well, PZ Myers found out about this, and linked to it. (Instead of trying to "herd cats", he used a laser pointer to put their attention where it's needed.) So there's been an influx of new donations, in just the last twelve hours. I think he put the reason behind the effort in fewer words that anyone so far.
...she's got a great blog, she's an outspoken, positive atheist, and she's one of those excellent representatives of atheist family values.
Not only is he eloquent, but he's also influential. He has a large following on the internet, and he was kind enough to send some of that traffic this way for a good cause.
Now P-Momma, before you continue reading this, I need you to sit down. It might not be a bad idea for you to have Dr. P-Daddy or the little possums standing by with some smelling salts.
The total has now reached $2,570. For those who are wanting to contribute in other ways, I'll contact you shortly via the emails you sent me.
Now, several people contacted me asking why I went with 3M instead of something less expensive. I have a few reasons for that, actually.
- The limited-lifetime warranty. Which requires that the film be installed by a 3M certified installer. I don't see a bad side to having less work for them to have to do, or us to organize volunteers for. (Althought there's been no shortage of people who have.) The warranty also means that 3M, and the dealer, will fix any problems that should occur with the film, such as bubbles, pealing, etc.
- They don't contain any metals. So, the film "corroding" and becoming an eyesore won't be a problem down the road. So, the house will look normal, and she won't have plywood with black sheets. There's already enough suspicion of atheists, without them thinking that she might be performing "satanic rites" in her bedroom.
- P-Momma has a reader who works at 3M. Pete contacted me with a name and phone number for a salesman at 3M. So, we'll be getting the film at a substantially reduced cost.
- UVA and UVB goes from approx. 2,900 to 4,000 angstroms. The 3M film is 99.9% effective against 3,000 to 3,800 angstroms.
I realize that the 3M film is expensive, compared to the stuff you can buy off the shelf, on Ebay, etc. However, this isn't just to protect furniture. This is about P-Momma being able to get outside of her bedroom during the daylight hours, and enjoy being with her kids. If you can find some film that is cheaper, but meets the above criteria, please let me know. For now, 3M may be more expensive, but it's the better choice for the purpose that we're purchasing it for.
If you'd like to donate, please go to Paypal, if you already have an account there, and send your donation to berlzebub_at_gmail_dot_com. If you don't have an account, go here and follow the instructions (using the same email address in the "To:" field).
Thanks to everyone who's participated, and especially to those who have given suggestions on alternatives. If P-Momma's health and life weren't at stake, I'd be willing to go with a cheaper alternative. However, that's a risk I'm not willing to take.

Hey, B. Better fix the spelling of PZ's name before he notices you spelled it wrong! Then delete this comment so he doesn't find out!
What misspelling? *whistles innocently*
Goodness me! Atheists being good and charitable? Next you will tell me they have morals too!
I would probably 'ping' ERV (http://endogenousretrovirus.blogspot.com) about this too... She has a big following too.
Be careful though, it depends on how many creationist babies she has had for lunch.
Keep up the good work!
holy crap berle, that is phenomenal.
good work! to you and everyone. I wonder if atheists will donate to my yacht fund.
berlzebub: Thanks for your efforts to co-ordinate this. Hopefully there aren't too many critics and complainers trying to ensure that "no good deed goes unpunished".
aardvark: Spelling variants of PZ's monikers are a time-honoured tradition on the internets.
And back to berlzebub: I don't usually post spelling corrections, but while we are on the topic: I'll bet that Dawkins didn't really say: "Organizing atheists is like hearding cats." (Though I just heard one purring loudly as he sat on my lap "helping" me type by chasing the cursor.)
I also sent a link to my friend at GIFS to see if they would be interested in adding a link.

Of course I won't tell you anything of the sort. I wouldn't want to shock your system so early in the week.

Maybe I should try that. The adults aren't very tender, and have a tendency to leave a rancid taste in my mouth.
@ TS:
No, kidding. And it's still climbing. Hopefully, this will be able to help the P-Family in other ways, too.
I'll donate to the yacht, as long as I can get a share of it. :-D
@ theo bromine:
Fortunately, the only "complainers" I've seen so far are on P-Momma's blog. Besides, with a name like mine they're probably afraid to visit my electronic abode. I also wouldn't be as "forgiving" as P-Momma.
Concerning my spelling, I was a bit excited (for good reason), and was trying to get this typed out before I got started at work.
@ poodles:
Thanks, Poodles. I'm rather reluctant to ask for help, myself. Since most atheists are objective, I'd rather that someone else vouch for my efforts, instead.
Sweet zombie jesus, good work Berlzebub :) This is amazing!
Bravo, Berlzebub and thanks for doing this. And I'm with you--the 3M product might be more expensive, but sunlight and lupus is not something you want to cut corners on. I wish I could be sending more, but I'll poke around the account a bit and see if I can't come up with at least a little more.

I posted about this at my personal Stardust Musings site and at God is for Suckers!
This is very good of you to be doing this, berlzebub
anyone know why paypal is showing up in Japanese?!?! Is it just me and how do I fix it?? Ergh...
Thanks Stardust!
That is awesome!
Hi B! I'm new to your blog, but I'm a fan of PMomma's, and so I wanted to let you know that I just PayPal'd you some funds for the 3M film. I mentioned this in the subject line of the email, but just because it will be coming from an unfamiliar email address, I thought I'd give you a heads-up.
Hi,
Go for the best UV film you can get, you and P-Momma won't regret it. Also make sure you don't get the reflective/mirror stuff, don't want to blind the neighbors.
We've had 3M tint on some of our windows (to keep heat out mostly) for years and it still looks brand new.
I've just made a small donation, because I'm hopeless with words of comfort.
