On P-Momma's blog, someone had a comment deleted. P-Momma explained why she deleted the comment, and then the commenter got a bit upset. Well, after Knitterman and I pointed some things out to her, she did the standard parting reply. "Waah, I'm leaving!"
What was the cause of all of this? Well, P-Momma cited the commenters NSFW avatar, and the violation of P-Momma's commenting policy. If you bother to read it, it says:
In addition, if you want me to read something you've written, e-mail me. If I like it, I'll post it here. If you want some traffic for your blog - send me a link (or just sign in with comments) and we'll check it out. But, please don't put gratuitous links to your own blog in comments.
Basically, if you're going to link about something, make it on topic. P-Momma's also a little leary of new commenters leaving links because of them falsly representing themselves before.
Said commenters reaction to this was amusing to say the least (it's in the "got a bit upset" link above). The commenter closed her response to P-Momma by calling her an "atheist bigot", which is why I responded. Why did she bother using that adjective, I wonder?
Anyway, said commenter went back to her blog, and complained about her comment being deleted, and she even complained in Italian (note: if one of my readers can translate Italian, I'd be very interested in what the comments are on that one). Of course, she didn't mention violating P-Momma's commenting policy, or any of that. All she focuses on is that P-Momma is an atheist, and the gratuitous nudity in her own avatar. Somehow, after reviewing all of the evidence (well, the parts she wants to focus on, anyway), she comes to the conclusion that "perhaps the problem with me is that my pussy's too hairy." If you find that funny, her actual closing line is "fuck the atheist moralists", and she didn't even bother to capitalize it. One can also note that she doesn't reference back to the post she's referring to, but simply gives her very one-sided view of what happened and the reasons.
Well, someone left an anonymous comment on her post. What is her elloquent response to his comments?
VAFFANCULO
which is apparently Italian for "FUCK YOU". Of course, she also dismissed most of the comment because they were "anonymous", as if that had any bearing on what they said. (Perhaps she should have a "No anonymous comments" rule, like P-Momma.)
So, since she doesn't feel inclined to hold intelligent discussions with "anonymous" commenters, I left this comment:
You're also leaving out the full reason for P-Momma deleting your comment. As she explained:
Mrs. Welby,
Kids read this blog. Putting porn in your avatar is unacceptable. Directly fishing for people to come vote in your blog, when you've never commented here before? Fish somewhere else.
If you had read her commenting policy, it's labeled No anonymous comment! on the top left of her blog, you'd have known not to just leave a fishing link in your first post there. Her preference is that you email her with such, and then she can post about it if she likes it.
Further, you waited until this post to tell us the artist's name. Your assertions that he was "well known" and that he was "AMERICAN" did nothing to prove your opinion that it was art.
Also, it wasn't the blog owner who described your avatar as "distasteful", it was a commenter. Even he pointed out that the definition of porn is "in the eye of the beholder" (e.g. subjective). So, you can't even say that is the reason your comment was deleted.
Last but not least, you calling P-Momma an "atheist bigot" was not only uncalled for, but categorically wrong (as I pointed out in my comment to you). At best, you could have called her a prude, but the fact that you felt the need to use her godlessness as an adjective tells me that you want to feel persecuted. You didn't even give P-Momma the chance to respond to respond [yes, I goofed here] to your "apology" before you ran away crying "I've been banned".
Art and pornography are subjective. Personally, the pubic hair on your avatar doesn't bother me, but I still don't consider it "art". All I see is gratuitous nudity while smoking a cigarette, in black and white.
Yes. Her argument for her "art", while ignoring the other reason her comment was deleted, is that the artist was "well known" and "AMERICAN", and that the picture was in black and white. I honestly could have let it slide, if it wasn't for her closing her first response with "you are an atheist bigot".
So, Miss Welby. You make your argument on a subjective subject (what is art) while completely ignoring the other reason that your comment was deleted, you don't even wait for P-Momma to respond to you before going to your own blog and crying "I've been banned", and then you make your own post without even referencing where it happened so you can come to your own conclusions and attack the straw man. Your comment was deleted because your picture was suggestive of porn, and your link was fishing. Saying it's art because it's by an "well-known AMERICAN artist" (who you didn't name until your post) was not a defense.
First, I've never heard of Helmut Newton, until your post (there goes the appeal to popularity). Of course, he may be popular in the artistic circles, but that means absolutely squat (there goes the appeal to authority).
Second, you must think that saying he is AMERICAN would give his "art" more weight, so to speak. Well, you are most assuredly mistaken. Our current president is also American, but his opinion on art (or any other matter) is not mine.
So, get some clothes on Miss Welby. Your persecution complex is showing.
You say VAFFANCULO to "atheist moralists", I say you are a SHEISKOPF.
Note: I don't speak German. I learned this word in college.

This person seems to comment on a lot of atheist blogs. I noticed a comment of hers on a friend of mine's blog. She didn't have the avatar on, but I think that might have been something to do with his settings on his blog. Basically, her entire post was just an advertisement for her own blog. She probably just looks at a blogroll and goes to sites she hasn't been in order to attract new readers. What a loser.

I noticed that, too. She's obviously trolling for an audience.
Berlie... You didn't even give P-Momma the chance to respond to respond [yes, I goofed here] to your "apology" before you ran away crying "I've been banned".
THANK YOU!! What makes it so much harder to take her seriously is that her original comment referenced the rules in a snarky fashion. I believe she used "the rules" in quotations and then preceeded to break them. So, she's either incredibly self-centered or a person who goes around looking for a reason to cry foul. Interestingly, if you google her user name, you'll find that this isn't the first time she's been deleted.
Although I don't know Italian, I can get the gist of the Italian post because I know Spanish. Don't take this as a direct translation.
"The moral atheist, (something about it being the first time since her blog started): One of my comments was canceled by another blogger because my avatar was pornographic!"
Then she talks about the hairy Mons and how they are from artist so and so.
"Second, vulgar pornography consists of penetration in color, while this is art in black and white. After seeing myself censored, incredibly, while being in an atheist blog, then evidently- I have learned a hard lesson- it is not synonymous with liberal or libertarian. I'll keep my historic avatar newton-welbico, and if someone does not appreciate the hairy Mons..." end of what I can comprehend.
Anyway, it's the same whiny one-sided story of how she was censored because her avatar had a hairy Mons.
How hard is it to understand what is appropriate on a family-oriented blog? Would she show that picture to children? If not, she shouldn't have it as an avatar. If so, she'd have some rather pissed-off parents making far ruder comments in her direction.
@ Tanya:
That's the feeling I'm getting, too. I invited her here, but I don't think she's going to come. (Possibly because I'm not going to link to her, in a positive way.)
@ P-Momma:
She did "apologize", sort of, on her blog. However, it still seems like an "Oh crap, I stepped in it this time" reaction. She was wrong, and, when trying to redirect the argument didn't work, she tried to backpedal.
@ Brigit:
Thank you. I was able to sort some of it out, by my (very old) knowledge of French. But some of the more difficult words I might could guess, but I didn't want to jump to conclusions.
I also pointed out to her that was not the reason she was sensored.
@ Autonomous:
I suspect, from some of her arguments, that she doesn't see anything wrong with children seeing such a picture. Granted, Americans are more "uptight" about nudity than the rest of the world, but I sure don't consider her avatar art. To me, it's just gratuitous nudity with a cigarette, that just happens to be in black and white.
All in all, I think anonymous, in her comments, was spot on by asking if she was just a troll or an attention whore. I think she just wants attention, but she didn't anticipate that it could be negative.
I've been thinking on this since yesterday and I probably DID mis-label the avatar as "porn". I did so a bit tongue in cheek. But, I do think there's a difference between art and a black and white photograph. And, I think there's a difference between something like Michelangelo's David and that avatar. I'm not opposed to nudity - this may be TMI, but it's not uncommon to find someone wandering around this house looking for a towel in the buff or stripping down after getting completely dirty (messy) and needing to traipse to the bathroom without clothes on. And, we have a rule that, as long as you are in your private space (your room, a bathroom, or whatever) and you've taken care to assure that others won't be made uncomfortable by your nudity, then by all means...be naked. It's nothing to be ashamed of. The human body is beautiful and we appreciate it.
However, there's what is APPROPRIATE and what is not. Unfortunately, for that blogger, she was on my turf and, because they're my children, and because I know other parents let their kids read my blog, *I* get to make the call on what's appropriate. *arg* I'm just going to make a post about this.
Berlie! Will you be home tonight? I was going to call you.
She has an English translation link you can click on to read it in English. It's at the top of her page.
Oh, did you mean some of the comments? Sorry.
I saw her at my place once. Deleted her without comment since she was obviously fishing and was quite off topic. My brother got a similar comment very quickly. Smelled like a bot.
And what am I supposed to think with a nude avatar acting like a bot, trying to get people follow a link?
Easy now. Y'all are starting to get a little close to home here...
:)
